Item Description

Unique and very sculptural 360-degree small cabinet of calcite replacing a fossilized colonial coral from Key Largo Island in the Florida Keys. Vertical columns of the colonial corals are well preserved in the satin lustre, translucent creamy stalks and many of the striking sharp secondary calcite rhomb overgrowths at the top. Complete all-around and pristine, the few small attachments are at the base. Key Largo Island is a Pleistocene reef (2.6 MYA to 11,700 years ago). Much of the reef is composed of coral. A fascinating example of biology meeting geology. Rare older material, as it came from an old Florida stash.
