Item Description

A very hard to find specimen from the little known Black Girl Mine, a few miles north of the town of Ouray in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. This is the FIRST specimen we've ever had to offer from this locality. The piece is an aesthetic miniature sized piece features attractive, soft golden-beige colored (colored by iron oxide), "feathery", scalenohedral crystals of Calcite measuring up to 2.1 cm, sitting atop oxidized matrix. You can see there a few small contacts on the Calcites that reveal the ivory white hue of the crystals underneath. The piece sits beautifully on its own without the aid of a base or clay. A very attractive piece that would make a great addition to any Calcite collection, or a suite of Colorado minerals. You'd be hard-pressed to find another piece from this mine on the market anywhere. Valued at $500 retail. From the collection of Colorado mining legend, Dave Bergman. Dave is now retired, but among other things, he was the foreman and primary person in charge of recovering specimens at the famous Sweet Home Mine near Alma, Colorado during the late 1970s. He is also the maternal grandfather of Brian Kosnar. See Dave's photo mining at the Sweet Home on page 58 of Peter Bancroft's book "Gem and Crystal Treasures".
