Item Description

Here we have a rather obscure Copper specimen from the Mountain Con Mine (referred to as "The Con" as it was a consolidation of the Mountain, Burnett, Loweville, and Buffalo Mines on the big hill in Butte). It's also the deepest mine on the Butte Hill, as the surface elevation is roughly 6,000 feet, and goes down 5,291 feet deep according to the entry on storyofbutte.org. The entry goes on the say that, "The Mountain Consolidated Mining Company was formed to operate the mine, and by 1887 the mine was owned by the Chambers Syndicate. In 1891 it became the property of the newly incorporated Anaconda Mining Company (to be renamed the Anaconda Copper Mining Company in 1895).". This is the only specimen of Copper that we've had to offer from this locality. It's a 117.6 gram mass of solid Copper, showing small crystals measuring to about 3 mm on the reverse side. A cool esoteric locality piece that you're not likely to find anywhere else on the market.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 7128; 1114 MT.2. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
