Item Description

This metamorphic matrix of this highly unusual California specimen contains numerous pinkish-purple Corundum crystals up to 8 mm. The hexagonal crystals have flat terminations, good luster, and the fluorescence is a classic, brilliant red. The label says 'Ruby', Mindat says 'Sapphire', but either way this is a fine Corundum specimen for the locality, which is wihtin the LA area metroplex today. This was recently deaccessed from the extensive collection of Bob Reynolds, who cherished both minerals and fossils as he collected. Bob is a prolific author and has had several curating positions in museums. A rare, if somewhat beauty-challenged, California specimen
