Digenite (fine crystals)

Item Description

Digenite is not often seen in well-crystallized specimens from most localities, but the Leonard Mine in Butte is certainly one of the premier places in the world for this copper sulfide. This piece is a fantastic toenail sized specimen, close to being what I would call competition quality, featuring several sharp, well-formed, good, sized dark grey-black colored metallic trigonal crystals measuring up to 1.7 cm on edge, free of matrix. The overall form and arrangement of the Digenites makes for a very appealing specimen, one of the best in this size range that we've had to offer, both in terms of quality and crystal size. Fine and rare on the market, a really good crystallized Digenite from this famous locality in Butte.
The piece was originally part of the collection of George F. Croad, and came to George Loud through Dr. Robert ("Bob") Jenkins in November of 2002.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 6325; 2314 MT.3. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
