Item Description
This is arguably the finest specimen of this rare pseudomorph material from Butte. To the best of my knowledge, Butte is the only area in the world where Djurleite replaces Enargite, and this one is a truly fine example. Djurleite is rare enough from Butte, but to find it pseudomorphing after Enargite in such an attractive specimen is fantastic. This small cabinet specimen hosts prismatic Enargite crystals which measure to about 1.1 cm that have been completely replaced by dark grey-black Djurleite (one copper sulfide is essentially replacing another), with a single associated Quartz crystal measuring XXXXXXXXXXXX cm, and minor Pyrite on the reverse side. Under magnification, you can see defined complex Djurleite crystal faces all over the former Enargite crystals. No damage and very attractive in person. A really special piece, both from the standpoint of a specimen from Butte, but also a worldwide pseudomorph.
This piece was formerly in the collection of Bill and Anne Cook, and Harold Urish, both collections we purchased and sold previously.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 10,262; 2.4.7.2 MT.3 George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
