Item Description

A wonderful small cabinet display specimen of the world-famous Epidote crystals from the historic locality at the Knappenwand in Austria. Even though the Knappenwand is not the type locality for Epidote, it is almost certainly the locality most associated with the species, as some of the most iconic and highly sought after specimens have been found there. This piece hosts a fairly thick, lustrous, sharp, well-formed, prismatic crystal of Epidote with a couple attractive accenting crystals free of matrix. The main crystals has attractive "chisel"-shaped termination with some slight eye-catching thin stepped growth lines for a nice touch. The color is nearly a very dark greenish hue (nearly black), like most of the crystals from this locality, but in reflected light, you can see greenish and golden colored sub-surface reflections in certain areas. The piece is in excellent condition, with no major damage, though there is a separation mark (not damage) on the lower back portion of the piece were it was removed from the pocket wall. The underside of the crystal is not broken, as it was recrystallized ("re-healed"), and shows tiny pistachio green colored terminations. A fantastic overall specimen of this beloved material from Austria. The piece is decades (possibly over a century) old, and comes with a fantastic antique hand-written label in German. Ex Herb Obodda private collection (not his dealer stock), and his collection label (#3675) accompanies the piece. Valued at $5,0000 in the inventory.
