Item Description

A beautiful showy display specimen of fine quality, gemmy penetration twinned cubes of Fluorite from recent mining at the historic Greenlaws Mine in Weardale. The main twinned Fluorite group features crystals up to 1.8 cm on edge and is VERY GEMMY when backlit. Other Fluorite crystals on the piece feature unusual white "cotton" or "web" like inclusions that almost resemble ice forming on the windshield of a car. Overall the piece is in great shape, with only a few minor imperfections here and there. Like most Fluorites from the area, they perform a color change in different temperature lighting. The color in outdoor lighting shows a rich purple hue with gentle yellow tones mixed in. Indoors, the color lightens a bit with softer purples and yellows, but under warm halogen lighting, the large main Fluorite twin shows a vibrant rose-pink color. Additionally the piece glows under SW UV light, like most Fluorites from the Weardale area. A very attractive and eye-catching specimen of this classic contemporary material. Valued at $4,500 in the inventory, and the piece comes with a FREE custom acrylic base for easy display. This mine was active from 1850-1884, but was reopened in 2010 with the purpose of collecting Fluorite specimens and studying the deposits around Weardale. From the collection of Brian Kosnar
