Fluorite (GEMMY crystals) (ex Shields Flynn Collection)

Item Description

This is a wonderful example of these seldom seen Fluorites. The listing on mindat states that this locality, "was productive mine in the orefield under the Beaumonts and subsequently the Weardale Lead Co." This piece was mined between 1969-1983 when the British Steel Corporation reopened the locality. It features a predominant, very sharp, lustrous, GEM QUALITY cubic crystal of Fluorite with a wonderful pinkish purple color, which and accompanying sidecar crystal, and no matrix. With backlighting, you can see a slight amount of "phantom" color zoning inside the big crystal. If you take the piece into sunlight, you'll see the classic daytime fluorescence that is associated with this material. One corner has a small cleave on the main crystal, but overall it's a very good example of this classic material, and one of the best thumbnails we've had to offer from this locality.
