Item Description

A superb old specimen from the Mining Academy in Freiberg, circa late 1800s, this is a MAJOR German galena specimen. It has large galena crystals, is in excellent condition, and has a bizarre association with little bowtie clusters of selenite - I have not seen this before. It also has association with sphalerite and quartz. So in sum this is such a large, interesting and historic piece, that it stands on its own merits without the neat old label. But, that being said, its a historic piece good enough aesthetically to hold its own in any collection of worldwide display specimens, too. I love that merger of qualities. Valued $900-1250 in the US market, I would say. However, I have seen much lesser german and Hapsburg-area galenas go for a lot more money, in Euros, at the Munich show to the locality afficionados in Europe who know more about such things than I
