Item Description

This rich, matrix gold specimen features elegant swirls and growths of gold crystals with a stunningly bright and pure color, contrasted on mounded matrix of quartz. Also present, which is HIGHLY unusual, is a large zone of arsenopyrite crystals, which is a fascinating and rare association. This cabinet specimen is an old piece that was sold by the dealer Christian Gobin to a collector in France long ago (the Destrem collection, we were told), and then repatriated to the USA by his son, dealer Christophe Gobin, decades later. Gobin sold it to Terry Wallace, noted collector of silver species in particular, who also has a larger interest in sulfides and golds. He purchased this as his large display gold specimen, because it was one of only a handful of known large golds with good arsenopyrite association....but it is ALSO a display quality and highly unusual gold in its own right, with unique aesthetics. The banding of the gold veins wraps around the exposed portion of the matrix here, but also continues within. We have a reliable and local gold expert in Dallas, Doug Wallace, who has specialized in gold and gold assay for 50 years. He did a specific gravity test and showed there are 9.97 troy ounces of gold within the piece (310 grams out of a 608 grams total mass, by specific gravity). 9.97 troy ounces gold content is just under $28,000 at recent gold prices, simply for the gold content of this important and large display specimen. The specimen value, as a piece to look at and enjoy, should be more than the mass alone.
