Item Description

A superb large, amazingly sculptural 360-degree floater pseudomorph from this well-known Arizona locale. Gypsum has replaced a striking intergrown cluster of dramatic spearpoint-shaped glauberite crystals. The impressive large spearpoint is about 7.5 cm and the coatings on the striated faces of the translucent crystals adds much character. Glauberite is an uncommon Na-Ca-sulfate found in evaporite deposits and this ancient salt-clay-gypsum mining area is famous for such unusual pseudomorphs. Complete all-around and nearly pristine, with only trivial scattered bruising. Amazing, for such a soft mineral. See the 1983 Mineralogical Record in the Arizona-IV Special Issue, Vol. 14, No. 2. Formerly in the Al Ordway Collection and acquired as a gift in 1975. Ex Bob Reynolds Collection, a well-known fossil and mineral expert and Curator of the San Bernardino County Museum. He passed away in 2020. This is easily the finest large gypsum after glauberite from the locale, that we have offered at auction. This artistic piece has multiple display views.
