Item Description

This is a really sculptural, gorgeous cluster of the classic Hematite "kidney ore" found from the early 1800s until, at the end, just a few more modern finds into the mid-1900s, in this classic mining district that fueled the industrial revolution. That is the problem, as well - so few of these wonderful hematites survived in this size, relative to what was mined, because they became the raw material of modern civilization. This large display specimen weighs in at 9.5 pounds. It is miraculously complete and undamaged, 360 degrees, contacted only on the bottom if you stand it horizontally for display as shown here in front and back images (and we can make a base for that purpose). This has a really pleasing color to it. You can see why the miners called them "kidney ore" as well! Most examples in this size range are rather clunky and do not fit well into a collection of fine things, but this one has a shape, size, and style combination that fits right in. Valued $7500-10,000
