Item Description

This Payun Volcano locality, just outside of Patagonia in southern Argentina, is famous for producing these remarkable pseudomorphs of Hematite after Magnetite. During the last 20 years or so, but sporadically, these unique specimens have trickled out of this area and continue to surprise us with the gorgeous forms and geometric shapes of these amazing pseudomorphs. The Hematite has replaced the stunning sculptural form of the original octahedral Magnetite crystals which range from robust textbook crystals, to highly "hoppered" / skeletal examples all the way to slender elongated forms. The largest crystal measures 6.7 cm long. This eye-catching specimen has excellent luster, impressive, razor-sharp, faces and a beautiful metallic silvery-grey hue on the surface. A slight iridescence can be seen here and there, giving the piece just a hint of color. It is complete-all-around with no point of attachment, so I'm calling it a complete "floater". Priced in the inventory at $4,500.
