Item Description

The Hemimorphites from the Summit Mine do not get enough credit for their impressive size and quality. They are seldom seen on the market, but they are truly impressive for what they are, as the crystals are often larger than any individual crystals you'll find from famous Mexican localities like the Ojuela Mine or Santa Eulalia. This piece is a striking full cabinet-sized example filled with large (measuring up to 3.7 cm long), sharp, well-formed, bladed crystals which are partially coated my micro drusy white Quartz, on minor matrix. Nearly every single crystal on the piece is damage-free, and the main crystal sits so beautifully in the upper central portion of the piece, creating an aesthetic and balanced specimen. Fine quality, with BIG crystals for the species. This isn't some esoteric locality specimen, it's a really impressive Hemimorphite regardless of where it's from. The piece was collected on either April 10th or 11th, 2001 by Chris Tucker, and purchased just over a week later by George at the Rochester Mineralogical Symposium. It was valued at $350 over 20 years ago, but I would put it much closer to the $3,500 range today for the size, quality and scarcity on the market.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 5907; 423 MT.2. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
