Item Description

Stunning form, gorgeous colors and complex crystallization on this beautiful and outstanding large ammonite from Madagascar. The fossil has been cut in half and polished to show the fantastic interior and exterior structures and colors. The dramatic interior chambers are completely visible. Some are filled with colorful vari-colored calcite, a few with clay while MOST are hollow and lined with oxide-tinted drusy dogtooth calcite. The number of hollow chambers are most impressive on this piece. The exterior shows the amazingly convoluted suture patterns. The species is Cleoniceras and the fossil dates to the Late Early Cretaceous Period, about 100 million years ago. 1524 grams or 3.4 pounds mass. It looks like modern art!
