Striking rosettes of thin paper calcite rhombs richly and dramatically cover the sculptural large matrix plate on this impressive specimen from an uncommon California locale. The translucent creamy rhombs reach 3.7 cm (doubly terminated) and rhombs have transparent centers. The matrix is an earlier calcite generation. The Hilton deposit was developed during World War II for optical grade (Iceland spar) calcite. Mining ceased during the war, with some collecting afterward. Orangy-pink fluorescence. Ex Dixon and Wolfe Collections. Dixon obtained piece from the Greiger's, well-known California dealers from 1946 to the late 1970s. $25 was not cheap in those days! A RARE and choice large specimen from the locale. A MUST for the species, California or fluorescent collector.
