Item Description

Rare, sculptural, large and aptly named "step" calcite from the Picher Field, Oklahoma portion of the historic Tri-State District. Large blocky, gray, translucent rhombs with waxy lustre have a distinctive stepped-growth pattern. Marcasite patches coating and included in the crystals add character and contrast. The two cleaved sides are out-of-sight on this impressive old-timer. Ex Al Kidwell Collection and acquired from well-known Tri-State mineral dealer, Chink Enders, in 1968 just before the mines closed. Al was a well-known mineral collector and research geologist for Exxon. He passed away in 2008. The Phosphate Kidwellite is named for him. See the 2017 Mineralogical Record Tri-State District! Special Issue in Vol. 48, No. 2. A fine large and uncommon example of the stepped style of calcite from the District.
