Item Description

Mimetite is one of the most popular secondary ore minerals in the world. I think it's safe to say that the famous Tsumeb Mine is the premier locality for the species, if for no other reason, than it produced 2 inch (5 cm) GEM QUALITY crystals on matrix. Mimetite is probably found in more colors and habits from Tsumeb than just about any other major world locality. I've seen single water clear yellow prisms to cluster to pearly groups and even botryoidal habits, all in fine quality specimens from this amazing mine. I would say the most desirable form is any piece that shows textbook hexagonal prisms like this specimen. This particular piece features a group of very well-formed and eye-catching, sharp, prismatic, hexagonal crystals with a beautiful yellow hue measuring up to 1.1 cm, sitting atop dark oxidized matrix. Upon close inspection you can see that many of the Mimetites are quite gemmy, even water clear in areas. Additionally there is a small white prismatic scalenohedral crystal of Smithsonite (that oddly resembles a Quartz crystal) flaring off the side of the piece for a nice touch. The piece is fairly three-dimensional and was a bit difficult to photograph, but truly looks better in person. A good quality and showy toenail of classic Tsumeb Mimetite.
