Item Description
The Black Pine Mine is a famous, and now-closed Ag-Au-Cu-Pb-Zn-Sb occurrence that dates back to 1882. The mine is renowned for its attractive secondary ore species, including the finest Veszelyites in the world. This piece is a notably rare example featuring small very pale straw colored, thin prismatic crystals of Mimetite (some of which have formed radial "sprays") measuring up to 1.0 cm, associated with minor accenting Cerussite, sitting on Quartz and Pyrite matrix. The label states that there is Hübnerite on the piece, but I looked at it closely under magnification for a few minutes, and I couldn't find anything that resembled Hübnerite. It's one of VERY few examples of Mimetite that we've ever had to offer from this locality, and would make a great addition to any suite of specimens from the Black Pine Mine.
The piece originally was in the collection of Joe McCown Jr.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 10,185; 41.4.2.2 MT.2. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
