A really eye-catching, three-dimensional classic specimen of Neptunite from the famous and now closed Gem Mine in California. Along with Benitoite, Neptunite is one of the "staples" from this locality, and these crystals are certainly the best of the species ever found. This piece hosts fine, sharp, highly lustrous, prismatic crystals of dark reddish-black Neptunite measuring up to 2.5 cm long which are sitting on a thin layer of white Natrolite on host rock matrix. It's rare to find such a showy arrangement of crystals like this, especially with good aesthetics and only minimal damage. Most of the crystals are pristine, but there are a couple of nicks, hence the auction listing. A great pickup for any fan of this material. You don't see hardly any good Neptunites on the market anymore these days, so don't miss out on a piece of this fast-disappearing material. Priced in the inventory at $700. From the collection of Robert (Bob) Reynolds. Bob was a well-known fossil and mineral expert and former Curator of Earth Sciences at the San Bernardino County Museum in California. The rare phyllomanganate-chromate species Reynoldsite was named in his honor in 2011.
