Item Description
Colorful and sculptural, carved and polished large banded Rainbow Obsidian from this obscure Mexico locale - the Revoltosa Mine in Jalisco State, Mexico. Obsidian is a very fine-grained volcanic glass. The beautiful and colorful iridescent banding agent of Rainbow Obsidian has been determined to be oriented nanocrystals of Hedenbergite (a Pyroxene Group mineral) by Dr. George Rossman of Caltech. Rainbow obsidian is quite RARE worldwide. MINDAT lists only three localities - this one in Mexico and two in the USA. 733 grams or 1.6 pounds mass. Ex Tim Sherburn Collection. A fine large colorful example of the rare material.
