Item Description

The ram's horn gypsum crystals on this striking and sculptural large 360-degree biomorphic gypsum specimen look like the extended arms of an octopus above the body! The impressive curved "arms" reach about 7.0 cm and the bulging "eyes" on the body are visible. The piece is from the less well-known Bustillos Mine at famed Santa Eulalia. Ex Al Kidwell Collection and acquired at a Rocks & Minerals Benefit Auction. The specimen was donated by respected Mexico expert and author, Dr. Peter Megaw. Al was a well-known mineral collector and research geologist for Exxon. He passed away in 2008. The Phosphate Kidwellite is named for him. The dramatic compostion of the sparkly gypsum is surreal and cartoon-like.
