Item Description

Here we have a hard to find locality specimen of Rhodochrosite from the Julia Fisk mine in the famous mining district of Leadville, Colorado. These are some of the most uncommon Rhodochrosites from any locality in Colorado, and while they don't look like the famous pieces from the Sweet Home Mine, they are certainly eye-catching. The piece is filled with small, sharp, lustrous, compressed rhombohedra of soft pink Rhodochrosite on matrix. The largest crystal measures about 4 mm across. It should be noted that some of this material is labeled as manganese-bearing Siderite, but this one is confirmed as Rhodochrosite due to the fact that it has more manganese than iron content. One of the few specimens of this obscure material that I have handled. From the worldwide Rhodochrosite collection of Dr. William S. Logan (Specimen #X16-6).
