Item Description

When I first picked up this specimen, I immediately thought it was from the Swiss Alps. Imagine my surprise to see it was from California! The quality combined with the rare locality make it a significant and beautiful example of what is a common species. The piece is not only very sharp, well-formed and lustrous, but shows textbook crystal from with a beautiful hexagonal pyramidal termination and a couple of "left handed" rhombohedral faces where the prism meets the termination. Additionally, the crystal is essentially 100% WATER CLEAR, with a beautiful rich smoky golden-brown hue. The base is contacted where the piece detached from the pocket wall, but it is still a very fine example of Quartz, and would make a wonderful addition to any suite of gem crystals, California minerals or worldwide Quartz specimens. Ex Kay Robertson Collection (#9063). Kay was a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics. She nearly lived 100 years from April 1920 - March 2020. See the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record ( https://www.mineralogicalrecor... ), and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017.
