Spessartine Garnet

Item Description

Since at least the early 1990s, there have been some excellent red Spessartine Garnet crystals coming out of various pegmatite localities in Pakistan. These crystals are often larger than average for Garnet, with rich red to orange-red hues along with superb crystallization. This piece is from a recent (2020) discovery at Raikot and features a large, sharp, lustrous, slightly striated dodecahedral crystal of Spessartine with a rich orange-red hue. When backlit, the piece shows good internal gemminess/translucency. The crystal is free of matrix and even features a little "sidecar" crystal on the top for a nice touch. The front of the piece is in great shape, and the back is incomplete / etched, but not really broken, as I can see small lustrous crystal faces all over. You don't see a lot of sharp, lustrous, gemmy Garnet crystals that are approaching 4 cm from any world locality, and these pieces from Pakistan deserve more attention for their size, quality and crystallization.
