Item Description

This is a notably hard to find specimen of Stolzite with Hübnerite from the famous Black Pine Mine in Montana. I am told that there was only a single pocket of this material ever found. Stolzite is the tungstate-bearing end member of a series with Wulfenite, and this piece hosts thin white "crusts" which are partially overgrowing and possibly pseudomorphing dark reddish-brown prismatic crystals of Hübnerite measuring up to 2.5 cm, sitting on a matrix of very gemmy, sharp, lustrous, prismatic, colorless Quartz crystals, which measure up to 2.6 cm long. It's my understanding that Stolzite and Hübnerite were always found together from this pocket, and Chris Van Laer stated on an entry on mindat.org that, "While all stolzite from the Black Pine Mine is intimately associated with hubnerite, the latter most often corroded or etched; examples from this singular pocket are the only true pseudomorphs after hubnerite, perhaps from anywhere". A cool rarity from this famed locale, virtually unseen on the market today.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 8675; 48.1.4.2 MT.1. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
