Item Description

An impressive full cabinet-sized display specimen of Tetrahedrite (the specific species isn't known so we have it labeled as Tetrahedrite Subgroup) from Butte featuring dozens of sharp, well-formed, dark grey-black colored tetrahedral crystals measuring up to 2.2 cm on edge, free of matrix. It's incredibly rare to find Tetrahedrite specimens of this size and quality from any locality in Butte, especially well-crystallized examples such as this. I will venture to say that this might be the best Tetrahedrite that we've ever had to offer from the district, and if you collect Butte minerals, please know that this one looks better in person (it's actually fun to view up close with a loupe) than the video might indicate. It's a choice specimen, filled with excellent crystals, and there's even a bit of blue-purple iridescence in spots, which makes me wonder if there's a minor amount of Chalcocite or Covellite present on the piece. Don't miss out, this is a really great piece for the locality. Valued $4,000.
Originally in the collection of Richard (Dick) Hauck of New Jersey, the co-founder of the Sterling Hill Mining Museum in Ogdensburg.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 6076; 3241 MT.2. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
