Item Description

Umbalite is not an actual species of Garnet, nor a variety, but it's actually the trade name designated for pink to purple gem quality Garnets from the Umba Valley in Tanzania. From what I've seen, there is no specific species of Garnet that qualifies as Umbalite, and analyzed gems have returned mixed results of multiple species including Pyrope, Almandine, Spessartine and occasionally Grossular Garnet. The famed "Malaya" Garnets from Tanzania are similar in the sense that they contain two or more species in the same stone. This stone is a wonderful example of Umbalite featuring a lovely pink hue, very very slightly included clarity and a wonderful "Oval Brilliant" cut. If you're a fan of Garnets, don't miss out on this attractive stone that would make a great addition to your collection or would make for the center stone of a nice piece of jewelry.
