Item Description

Without question, the largest and finest crystals of Veszelyite are those from the famed Black Pine Mine. This rare hydrated copper zinc phosphate is not seen from many world localities in fine crystallized examples, but the pieces that came from this mine are highly prized by collectors, not just for their rarity, but their obvious beauty. This specimen hosts several sharp, lustrous, intense blue colored flattened crystals measuring up to 8 mm, associated with minor light green Philipsburgite (for which the Black Pine Mine is the type locality) sitting on a group of off-white colored Quartz crystals which have a thin coating of light tan Hemimorphite. The Veszelyites are beautiful up close and most are in good condition, though there are some areas of roughness when you look closely. It's actually quite rare to find Veszelyite specimens of this size from the Black Pine Mine, most pieces are thumbnails or miniatures.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 8678; 42.2.1 MT.2. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
