Item Description

Glassy, translucent, variably sized complex calcite rhombs with frosted waxy luster faces, to 4.3 cm, richly and aesthetically cover the limestone matrix plate on this very fine and excellent old-timer from the famous lead mines of the Shullsburg district. Mining began in 1847 with the last mine closing in the 1970s (MINDAT). The trivial bit of noted edge rubbing is certainly only a modest detraction. Matrix plates of this richness, form and quality are very uncommon and this is an exceptional example. Classic Shullsburg calcite. Valued by the former dealer at $595 and worth it.
