Item Description

An unusual specimen of micro red Cinnabar on matrix from a locality called the Red Mountain Mine in Sonoma County, California. I can't find a listing for this mine in any database, so if anybody out there has a better idea of where this specimen came from, please let us know. With that said, the specimen is covered with tiny blood red spots of Cinnabar which are best seen with magnification. Oddly, there is a sentence on the top of the label written in Italian that says "Ricordo del viaggio di nozze", which translates into "Memories of the honeymoon". I'm not sure if Kay obtained this piece while on her honeymoon, or if there is another meaning that we're missing. A strange piece from an obscure locale, and certainly worth picking up if you collect minerals of California. Ex Kay Robertson Collection. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017).
NOTE FROM A VIEWER: regarding the cinnabar of unknown origin where the label said Red Mountain Mine, Sonoma, CA. It might be the Red Cloud Mine in Sonoma co. That mine has been mined for cinnbabar.
