Item Description

Classic and showy large fluorite from the famous Blackdene Mine. Lustrous, translucent, variable light purple cubes, to 4.2 cm (cube on top) are aesthetically intergrown on this sculptural piece. The checkerboard internal cleavage to this cubes adds an artistic flair. This is a typical color and form of fluorite from this well-known intermittently active Weardale mine, initially opened in the early 1800s for lead and later for fluorspar. The mine finally closed in 1987. In good shape, overall. The bit of noted corner bruising certainly has only minimal impact to the fine quality of this specimen. Rich purple fluorescence, as you would aspect! From an East Coast collection.
