Item Description

Barytocalcite is not listed by MINDAT for this historic old Freiberg mine, but is listed in the District in the fine 2015 Freiberg District article in the Mineralogical Record. Striking, RARE, banded brown barytocalcite with shimmering chatoyancy, like agate, resembles old-time barite variety "oakstone" from Derbyshire, England. The outer rind and RARE vein of massive fluorite at the bottom add unique character to this very rare style barytocalcite combination. Purple fluorite fluorescence. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 4440 and acquired from Al McGuinness in the mid-1960s. Comes with a German label. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record). This historic, perhaps UNIQUE old-timer from Freiberg probably dates to prior to World War I.
