Item Description

The locality on this one is quite obscure as the label says it was found near Randsburg, in Kern County, California. The town of Randsburg covers about 2 square miles and had a population of about 70 people according to the 2010 census. With that said, I've never seen a single specimen of any species from Randsburg, let alone a Prehnite, and I actually can't find a listing of any Prehnite found in any locality in Kern County period. This piece features a somewhat flowing layer of light green semi-botyroidal Prehnite that a light coating of an unknown tan mineral (perhaps some kind of clay). The tan mineral flowed in a single direction over the Prehnite creating a windswept appearance or something similar to water washing against a shoreline at the beach. It's very beautiful up close and I've never seen anything like it, so if you collect California minerals or Prehnite in general, don't miss out on this one, as it's a complete one-of-a-kind specimen. Ex Kay Robertson Collection (#1116). Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017).
