Item Description

A sawed and polished slab from the famous Canyon Diablo meteorite, now officially named "Meteor Crater" for the nearest post office in Meteor, Arizona. The crater is named the Barringer Crater in honor of Daniel Barringer who was first to suggest that it was produced by meteorite impact. The meteorite fall took place about 50,000 years ago. It is classified as a coarse iron octahedrite and contains carbonaceous material on both sides. 44.2 grams mass. Such slabs sell for $3-5 per gram. Ex David Burgess Collection.
