Item Description

This is a wonderful small cabinet sized display specimen of the world-famous Epidote crystals from the classic locality at the Knappenwand in Austria. Even though the Knappenwand is not the type locality for Epidote, it is almost certainly the locality most associated with the species. This piece hosts a few very lustrous, sharp, well-formed, prismatic crystals of Epidote free of matrix. The crystals have attractive "stepped" terminations and and almost "fan"-like growth in areas. Epidote is pleochroic, meaning that it shows different colors when viewed on different axes, and this piece shows a great mix of green, gold, orange and root beer colors when rotated in the light. We tried to show the color change in the photos as best we could, but it's better in person. The piece is in excellent condition, and the only major damage is on the base where it detached from the pocket wall. A fantastic overall specimen of this beloved material from Austria. Valued at $1,850 in the inventory.
