Item Description

Of all of the pegmatite localities in Maine, very few specimens of Rhodochrosite have been found. The best known and most sought after specimens are those from the Bennett Quarry, but experts know that the true holy grail for Maine Rhodochrosite is to get one from the illustrious Mt Mica Quarry. This piece is an incredibly rare specimen of Mt Mica Rhodochrosite featuring soft pink colored, partially etched rhombic crystals of Rhodochrosite measuring up to 5 mm, but it gets better as the piece is actually associated with gemmy, pseudohexagonal (orthorhombic) bladed groups of off-white colored (iron-stained) Bertrandite and even a few Pyrite crystals on silvery-white Albite matrix. Rhodochrosite, Bertrandite and Pyrite are not the kind of minerals that are found in a granite pegmatite like Mt Mica, and if you collect pegmatite minerals, Maine minerals or odd locality specimens, you cannot afford to miss out on this remarkable and impressively rare piece from what is the second oldest known Tourmaline locality in the United States. From the worldwide Rhodochrosite collection of Dr. William S. Logan (Specimen #X124-5) with a label from a previous dealer. Valued at $1,750 in the inventory.
