Acanthite (classic material)

Item Description

A classic specimen of the world famous Acanthites from Fresnillo. This piece is a wonderful thumbnail comprising sharp, well-formed, brilliantly metallic, silvery colored modified crystals of Acanthite measuring up to 1.1 cm associated with minor Quartz on the reverse side. The piece is crystallized all around, and is nearly a complete "floater", were it not for a tiny point of attachment that I can see on the back. I love that the piece has an almost chatoyant / directional luster when it's rotated in the light. A wonderful old piece from this historic silver producing region. PLEASE NOTE: There are some people that label these specimens (and Acanthite in general) as being pseudomorphs after Argentite, but they are technically paramorphs as Acanthite will actually transform into Argentite in an environment where the temperature reaches above 177 degrees Celsius, but they are not pseudomorphs.
