Item Description

Acanthite was a common silver ore at St Andreasberg, but was always encountered in small quantities, compared to the most important silver ores, pyrargyrite and dyscrasite. This is a RARE and sculptural thumbnail pseudomorph of acanthite after intergrown tabular pyrargyrite crystals from the famous Samson Mine. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 6885 and acquired in February, 1973. Kay assembled an important suite of classics and rarities from this famed district. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record). See the Mineralogical Record St. Andreasberg Special Issue, May-June, 2017, Vol. 48, No. 3. The is piece undoubtedly dates to the 1800s, as the last mine closed in 1910. Excellent and rare silver pseudomorph material from this famed locale.
