Item Description

A classic example of the famous Andradite Garnets from Serifos Island in Greece. These iconic skarn deposit specimens are a must have for any Garnet collector or collector of European minerals. This piece is filled with lovely cinnamon-red colored, sharp, well-formed, lustrous, dodecahedral crystals of Andradite measuring up to 4 mm with tiny soft green colored "Prase" Quartz on typical green Hedenbergite matrix. The crystals show a tiny bit of translucency when backlit, which is not common for this material. Very little damage, most of the crystals are pristine. Please note that the label states that this is Spessartine Garnet, but I have never seen a piece identified as Spessartine from this locality, so it's almost certainly Andradite. Ex Kay Robertson Collection (#12951). Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017).
