Item Description

Adamantine lustre, glassy, gemmy/translucent brown, orthorhombic anglesite crystals are aesthetically set on the scultpural mother rock matrix of etched galena. The striking, dominating crystal at the crest is 1.6 cm and the large tabular crystal, just below, is 1.7 cm wide. The four primary crystals on this classic and very showy combination from the famous Monteponi Mine are pristine. There is much drusy gray cerussite on both the front and back, as a bonus. Mining probably started in the area in the fifth and sixth centuries B.C for argentiferous galena and later zinc ores became important. The Monteponi Mine close in 1997. See the excellent article in the 2014 Mineralogical Record, Vol. 45, No. 6. An excellent, highly representative anglesite combination from the classic locale.
