Item Description

A classic old-time specimen of Aquamarine from the Marambaia locality in Brazil. This locality goes back to the early 1900s and had produced some of the most impressive gem quality Aquamarine crystals ever found in Brazil. According to the entry on mindat.org (https://www.mindat.org/loc-43841.html) a single crystal was found at Marambaia that yielded 550,000 carats of faceted stones!! This crystal has the characteristic blue-green hue that is a signature for the locale with textbook hexagonal prismatic form, and an attractive modified terminations showing basal and pyramidal faces. All the faces are sharp and lustrous, with no dull or "etched" surfaces to be seen. Internally, the clarity ranges from transparent to more translucent as there are some interesting inclusions that I think give the piece an ethereal quality and character. Overall, the crystal is in fine condition, with only one small imperfection on the side prism face, and it's obviously contacted on the bottom where it detached from the pocket wall. The piece dates back to the early 1970s, and comes from the collection of Richard A. Kosnar, famous mineral dealer and collector from Colorado who had a strong presence in Brazil importing gems and gem crystals. Specimen weight is 27.50 grams. Priced in the inventory at $1,250.
