Item Description

Axinite-(Fe) (formerly Ferroaxinite) has been known since the late 1780s, but good specimens from the type locality are few and far between. This attractive small cabinet specimen features beautiful "axe" or "wege"-shaped crystals with the classic alluring purplish-brown or clove-brown color. The crystals are notably sharp and lustrous with excellent gemminess in areas and they just glow with color when backlit. The largest Axinite measures 2.2 cm across, which is good sized for the material from the type locality. Now several crystals are unfortunately contacted, but they still show smooth well-formed faces. A hard to find piece from the type locality that would make a nice addition to any collection of European or French minerals or specimens from the type locality. This Ex Kay Robertson Collection. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017).
