Item Description

According to the listing on mindat.org, this locality is a well-known producer of Axinite specimens ( https://www.mindat.org/loc-29353.html ), but I can't really find too many photos of the material. With that said, this is a great historic specimen from Scopi (sometimes called Mt Scopi or Skopi) featuring sharp, lustrous, well-formed, "wedge"-shaped crystals of clove purple colored Axinite-(Fe) crystals measuring up to 1.4 cm associated with Calcite and free of matrix. Overall, the quality of the Axinites is fairly good, though there is some roughness. Overall I think the piece looks better in person than the photos indicate, and if you collect minerals of the Swiss Alps, or Axinite in general, don't miss out on this one. A note on the label states that the piece was collected prior to WWII, so it's at least 80 years old. Ex Kay Robertson Collection (#12638) with a label from A. Berger of Mudling, but this could be the city in either Germany or Austria, as both countries have a "Mudling" in them. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017).
