Item Description

Axinite specimens are very uncommon from Japan. This very fine and very rare combination old-timer is dominated by a striking, large, 2.7 cm, sharply terminated, translucent, clove-brown, tabular crystal. The matrix plate is composed of smaller axinites, quartz crystals (some doubly terminated), danburite crystals with chisel terminations and a few scattered calcite rhombs. MINDAT lists two mines in Kyushu Region, that hosts these species - photos on MINDAT seem to confirm this as Obira Mine, and to my eye the crystals look different than most larger, more robust and less translucent crystals I have seen from Toroku. Comes with a faded Lazard Cahn label, dated 1943 atop, and a Wards label. Bungo was formerly a province in eastern Kyushu. Ex Richard Hauck Collection. Valued at $450. Try to find another in this combination from Japan!
