Item Description
A lovely historic Azurite specimen from one of the most classic localities in all of Europe ! Typically the Azurite specimens from Chessy are found in less than desirable crystals, but this piece is a lovely "rosette"-esque group of sharp, well defined, rich blue color Azurite crystals. No matrix is visible, but the piece is not a complete "floater" as there are a few minor points of contact. The crystal faces have average luster, and are rather well-formed. It is very difficult for collectors to obtain fine quality specimens of this material today. Mining has taken place at Chessy since the Middle Ages, and finished in 1875, but the famous "Blue Room" - where Azurite was seen for the first time - took place in 1811, but this piece was found in the 1990s when pieces were collected off the dumps of the mines. A great specimen for any collector, a collector of European classics, or anyone who appreciates Azurite.
