Item Description

Sharp, lustrous, royal-blue to midnight-blue azurite crystals with hints of gemmy, "electric-blue" are very aesthetically clustered on this old-time specimen from the famous and now-closed Tsumeb Mine. The large crystal is 1.2 x 1.0 cm. A bit of bruising and a couple of broken crystals are noted, but have very minimal impact on the overall quality of this fine azurite, that displays well from several angles. Ex John Ydren Collection and comes with an old H. Maucher label. Herbert Maucher was the son of Wilhelm Maucher. Wilhelm was in charge of the mineral repository at the Freiberg Mining Academy and published the FIRST major investigation on Tsumeb minerals. He became a full-time mineral dealer in Munich in 1908, until his death in 1930. Herbert and his sister took over the business, with the label name change coming in 1936. This piece dates to before World War II. Valued at $1250
