Item Description

A rare and excellent barite from this obscure Dona Ana County locale. Mineral specimens of ANY type are RARE from here. Mineralization is in veins in a brecciated rhyolite sill of Tertiary age, intruded along the bedding contact of limestone and shale (MINDAT). Dramatically intergrown, jackstraw-style clusters of parallel-growth barite blades and individual barite crystals compose this sculptural small cabinet. The lustrous and translucent textbook spearpoints are highlighted by the imposing 4.0 tall single blade. The iron oxide tinting on some of the crystals adds real color and contrast. This is an impressive and RARE 360-degree piece from this locale. Complete all-around and in great shape. The interior is nearly pristine with only a gentle bruise to the tip of the large blade and the noted periphery wear is confined to the back side of the piece. Ex Tom Hales Collection and collected in 1996. RARE and highly desirable New Mexico barite. A MUST for the species or locality collector!!
