Item Description

Classic and rich, reddish-brown, pisolitic (pealike) bauxite from the Type Locality. Bauxite is a mixture and rock composed of hydrate aluminum oxides, iron oxides, kaolinite and other impurities. It is almost always found as a residual soil, not a sediment. Bauxite was discovered here in 1821 and this principal aluminum ore was named after the area (MINDAT). Mining ceased in 1991. Ex Al Kidwell Collection and acquired in 1968. A classic, rich and rare example of the ore and locality.
